Album: Water hyacinth - Water hyacinth
Erect, floating, water lily-like perennial with feathery roots, and a swollen, spongy leaf stalk. Reproduces from seeds and horizontal stems. Erect stems to 60 cm long, horizontal stems to 10 cm. New plants produced at end of horizontal stems. Leaves glossy, smooth, arranged in a rosette. Flowers in a 15 cm long erect spike, 4–7 cm across when open, funnel shaped, purple, 6 petals, the uppermost with a yellow centre. Spread by human cultivation and dumping. Seeds and plants carried by water flow.
