Nodding thistle
Annual or perennial, rosette-forming, then erect, usually single stemmed, 0.8–1.6 m. Rosette leaves grey-green, to 50 cm, mostly deeply lobed with each lobe ending in a 3 mm spine. Leaves at base forming wings along the stem. Stem grooved, winged, usually branching on upper half. Flowers spring and summer, usually purple, with 4-8 cm heads, surrounded by spiny bracts, upright at first but distinctively drooping when mature. Scattered infestations occur in East Gippsland . Seed dispersal via wind, hay and machinery
