Alligator weed
Free-floating, mat-forming fern with variable appearance depending on plant density. Stems submerged, not rooted, 1-2 mm thick, many branched, up to 30 cm long. Leaves in groups of 3: one submerged, root-like, brown, two floating, non-wettable, covered with rows of hairs. Floating leaves widely spaced, flat, to 1.5 cm wide, or, in dense infestations, crowded, folded along the midrib, to 6 cm wide. No flowers. Spores are produced but are not fertile in Australia . Reproduces by daughter plants. Spread by disposal deliberate release or on boats and other equipment used in water.
